B. Eugene Jones graduated from University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in Physics in 1976. While at the UA, he taught the first course in APL, a programming language for scientists and engineers using scientific notation, and learned about microprocessors. After graduation he began work at Arkansas Systems, where he spent the next 24 years of his career.
Based on his early experimentation with microprocessor based systems, he led development of the ASI accounting package for Intel based microprocessors. This set of systems – G/L, P/R, A/P, A/R, Fixed Assets, and Inventory – was installed at almost 1000 client sites. Written in Fortran, this package pre-dated Microsoft DOS and the IBM PC. Eugene later managed the development of the Arkansas Systems family of Path protocol conversion products. These were the first IBM PC-based 24×7 systems, working in banks on ATM, Teller and Network applications. Path I, the first of these, involved firmware on 8K (yes K) of ROM running on a PC without disk, monitor or keyboard. Path I remained in service almost 20 years.
Eugene managed the item processing division of Arkansas Systems, installing check processing solutions at banks and remittance processing solutions at firms such as 21st Century Investments, Dillard’s and Centerpoint. Interesting international sites included the Peoples Bank of China and the Central Bank of Russia. The Russian project was in conjunction with IBM UK and several international vendors.
Eugene had many other significant roles at Arkansas Systems. He was a Vice President and a Board member, and managed internal systems as well as product divisions.
After leaving Euronet Worldwide, Eugene formed Connect4Business.com, a business to business solution, allowing manufacturers and dealers to perform delivery chain transactions and communication processes. He has ownership in other technology firms and continues to develop software.
